Bike-pedalled cinema on Streatham Common!

For the first time ever, Streatham Common will be hosting a bike-pedalled cinema to celebrate 10:10:10, the day of environmental action.

At 7:30pm on Sunday 10th October 2010 you're warmly invited to join Sustainable Streatham and the public to watch Belleville Rendez-vous – a charming Bafta-nominated film about a Tour de France cyclist kidnapped by the mafia to power a stationery bike machine. The animated film is rated 12 and lasts for 80 minutes.

The cost is what you can pay (suggested £3), and soft drinks and homemade cakes will be on sale. It will all be in a tent so no need to worry about the weather.

Bring your bike if you want to hop on and pedal to keep the film going!

Please come along. A great attendance will really help small local community environmental groups get better recognition in the Borough. It will also give the Council a good sharp reminder that the environment is just as important as budget cuts.

More hot air from Lambeth Labour

Lambeth Council needs to clean up its act to meet its own environment targets.

It’s almost two years since the Council agreed a plan to reduce its energy consumption but we’ve seen very little action so far.

Herne Hill's Green Party councillor, Becca Thackray, was part of the all-party Climate Change Commission that produced 45 urgent recommendations in 2007. Two years on and some of these recommendations still haven’t even been touched.

Progress on domestic insulation has been desperately slow, there’s still no council-run recycling for businesses and the inefficient Town Hall heating system is stuck in the dark ages.

At a time when thousands of people are losing their jobs, it is unforgivable that the Labour are failing to invest seriously in energy efficiency and launch a clean energy revolution that could provide hundreds of thousands of new jobs.

Urban Green Fair

Bake Oven at Urban Green Fair

Join us for a festival with a difference. Learn about current environmental issues and solutions, discover practical innovations in sustainable living and reducing climate change and, of course, have fun!

An ideal family event, with films, talks in the social justice zone and energy transition zone, workshops, kids activities, stalls, sunshine and unusual bicycles. With no bars or big stages the emphasis is on education and communication. A chance to share ideas, meet familiar faces and make new friends.

With little government action on peak oil and climate change there is plenty to discuss and lots we can do as individuals.

Climate Change Commission Recommendations

Lambeth Council's Climate Change Commission has suggested a comprehensive set of targets and procedures for the Borough. You can read the full report by clicking the link below.

Councillor Rebecca Thackray (pictured), who was a member of the commission, said

"The current government is famous for setting ambitious targets and then doing nothing. Here in Lambeth, we can show them the right way forward."

Smart Meter Loan Scheme

Transition Town Brixton has launched its 'electricity descent scheme' by lending 10 household 'smart meters' to members for 4 weeks to monitor and reduce their energy use. Their only obligation is to keep a record of how much energy they manage to save and what they discovered in the process.

They have also negotiated a £10 off deal with the manufacturer.
